Heterochromatics was built with the noble purpose to find all the Heterochromia conditions around the world and give voice to this genetic mutation. But what is Heterochromia exactly? Is it a true blessing in life, or is it an eye disease? Some have never heard about it, while some other were born such, or acquire this condition later in life. Heterochromia is nothing but a difference in coloration, usually of the iris but also of hair and skin, and it’s determined by the production, delivery and concentration of melanin (a pigment).

Iris Heterochromia is surely a magic gift everyone wants to have and more precisely it’s a congenital genetic mutation which can also be acquired in some rare cases. Follow Heterochromatics journey to find out more about this peculiar trait on human beings, cats and huskies or dogs.

Heterochromatics is collecting some of the most astonishing Heterochromia conditions in their two main distinctions: Heterochromia Iridum and Heterochromia Iridis, which can be further distinguished in complete, segmental/partial or central. Complete Heterochromia Iridum is when one iris is a different color from the other. Segmental or Partial Heterochromia Iridis (or Iridum on some rare occasions, related to both irises) is when only a part of the iris is a different color from its remainder. In Central Heterochromia Iridum both irises have a ring around the pupil which is a different color from the outer part of the same irises.

Scientifically speaking there’s a lack of genetic diversity that is the primary reason behind this phenomenon called heterochromia. This is due to a mutation of the genes that determines melanin distribution at the 8-HTP pathway, which usually only becomes corrupted due to chromosomal homogeneity.

Heterochromatics Book

In January 2019 Heterochromatics started a book project gathering dichromatic people’s stories and pictures from almost 100 countries aroud the world with over 700 Heterochromia conditions. Many causes will be embraced and developed in this book, which is hopefully going to be the touchstone of self-awareness and self-love for each and every Heterochromatic that will surely live a comfortable life knowing their worth and accepting themselves for who they are.
